Building on the expertise of Deb Guthmann and Cindi Sternfeld, nationally known experts on issues related to substance abuse among individuals who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing, this workshop will provide participants the opportunity to learn about barriers to treatment and current national trends , review prevention and treatment approaches and how they can be applied with clients who have a wide range of cognitive and communication needs; become familiar with web based resources including 12 step meetings, case management, daily affirmations, etc; network with interested providers in the region and discuss possible ways to create new services and/or enhance existing services to this population. A variety of hands on activities will be used to illustrate the techniques and approaches being discussed. A training DVD developed for professionals working with Deaf clients who have addiction issues will be introduced as well as other innovative assessment and prevention materials. The ultimate goal of this workshop is to create a real and virtual network better able to meet the linguistic and cultural needs of persons in recovery who are also Deaf or Hard of Hearing.
